Turnovers Loom Large In Season Opener For Alderson Broaddus Football

Alderson Broaddus Football held their long awaited season opener with a 45-28 loss at home against Mercyhurst Saturday evening. A crowd of over 1,000 fans attended the contest at the Multi-Sport Performance Stadium.

Transfer Quarterback Jaylen Tregle completed 18 passes for 263 yards and three touchdowns. O'marion Taylor led the rushing attack with 45 yards on eight carries. Marvin Sims caught four passes for 95 yards, including a 28 yard touchdown skamper.

Michael Schweinefuss led the defense with 12 tackles and an interception. In total, the AB defense picked off three passes in the affair.

After falling behind 7-0 in the 1st, fellow Quarterback Dawson Skinner completed a 42 yard passing touchdown to CJ Turner to get the Battlers on the board and level the score. Big plays continued in the 2nd, as Jaelin Gray scored on a 66 yard catch and run from Tregle. Sims caught his touchdown with just seconds remaining in the first half on a tight-window pass from Tregle to make the halftime score 31-21 in favor of the Lakers.

Robert Shanabarger's four yard reception from Tregle capped a seven play-61 yard scoring drive to put the deficit to three at 31-28. An interception from Dave Miller kept the momentum going for the hosts in the 3rd, but a crucial 4th and 1 stop on the ensuing drive helped propel the visitors to regain the edge. A pair of Mercyhurst scoring drives helped the Lakers come away with a 45-28 road victory to open the season.

Alderson Broaddus Football will have a quick turnaround, as the Battlers face West Liberty on Thursday, September 8th in the MEC opener. Kickoff will be at 6 PM.
